Technological advances in; human error out. Chalk 2018 up to toe dips in the proverbial digitized pond.

Evidence of automated progression surfaced multiple times throughout 2018 with inevitable promises for grander implementation and efficiency in 2019. What does this mean for your business supply chain? Faster quotes, transparent start to end tracking, expedited delivery times, and fewer logistical errors or lost documentation.

Paper trail has been a term notoriously branded by the air freight industry as of late. Prepare to see this quickly replaced with paperless. The efficient one-eighty is due primarily to an incessant need for hyper efficiency and transparency on a global level.

We have seen the steady evolution in ways of paperless ULDs, eAWB, automated software, robotics, artificial intelligence, and digital logistics investments. China Airlines has implemented paperless ULDs in an effort to reduce manual tracking and scanning systems as cargo is being loaded onto air freights. ULD data is then uploaded and instantaneously logged instead of documented on paper. Easy access, improved accuracy.

“So far, the new Mobile Ramp Project [paperless ULDs] has reduced human error in the tracking of ULDs at TPE and has enhanced the safety of the operations. The project also fits into the carrier’s goal of reducing its carbon footprint and CO2 emissions by reducing the use of paper in its operations.”. [Alex Wei, associate vice president of China Airlines]

Digital investments are visibly on the rise as the likes of hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent on automated software implementation industry wide. While eCommerce has been a key player, accelerated efficiency has been another. The sheer need for air freight logistics to coincide with a certain fluidity in the online lives of consumers generates an insurmountable need for digitalization.

Logistics is complex and automation can essentially simplify the process to a certain degree. A logistics company based in Kuwait recently surveyed over 800 small and medium-sized businesses on an international scale. They found that “78 percent wanted to see their logistics move online” [Henadi Al-Saleh, chairwoman at Agility Logistics]
